Best of 2017: Makeup, Skincare & Fashion

With another year behind us, it’s time to reflect on some of our 2017 highlights. In today’s post, I’m sharing my favorite new makeup, skincare, and fashion discoveries of last year. This was a tough one to put together! So many fab items got cut even though I loved them to bits. To avoid rambling, I limited myself to selecting only 5 items in each category. I’m trying to keep things as concise as possible, even though that’s not how I tend to write!

Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki Brush

For years I remained faithful to drugstore makeup brushes, but in 2017 I decided it was time to break the routine. A few hours researching the best foundation brushes led me to the award-winning Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki Brush. It wound up being a perfect choice! It makes blending in foundation a fuss-free job. The best tool if you’re in a rush! No joke, it takes 30 seconds to do my foundation with this. The bristles are super soft and dense, making seamless blending a piece of cake.

Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick in Pillow Talk

Purchased on a whim while perusing Bergdorf Goodman’s flagship store in New York, the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk was my first ever high-end lipstick. Charlotte Tilbury’s lip liner in Pillow Talk was a beauty blogger favorite for years. I credit Amelia Liana for starting the craze. I was tempted to join in, but lip liners aren’t my cup of tea. In January last year, the brand finally launched a lipstick version. It’s the ultimate “your lips but better” shade that made me fall in love with pinky-nude lips. Plus, the packaging is absolutely stunning! Very 40’s Hollywood glam.

Smashbox Photo Matte Eyes Travel Palette

Initially bought as a travel eyeshadow palette, this quickly became my go-to everyday palette. It even replaced my beloved LORAC Pro to become my reached for eyeshadow palette of 2017. With the perfect mix of neutral, highly pigmented shades in a compact package, it is super handy. A perfect fit for those looking for an introduction to eyeshadow. The only shade it’s lacking is a matte black, but I’m not too fussed since I only use black eyeshadow for nights out.

NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base

I’d been loyal to my Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion for years until I stumbled upon this beauty. Initially, I was skeptical that the NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base could ever replace my love for the Urban Decay, but, holy hell, this blew me away! Hello, new holy-grail item. This will set your eyeshadow in place all day long without any creasing. The Urban Decay is a great option too, but it’s too finicky. Sometimes I’ll put it on and my eyeshadow is perfect after an eight-hour day. Sometimes I’ll end up with major creasing issues after a few hours, which, as we all know, is not fun. The NARS primer, on the other hand, has never failed me. If you’re in the market for a fail-proof eyeshadow primer, this is the one to buy!

Glossier Boy Brow

Now I know this is a very recent find, but I just had to include it because it’s too good to pass up. Whenever I use my Glossier Boy Brow, my brows somehow look better than ever. Perfectly tidied and miraculously fuller. I don’t always feel the need to fill them in anymore. I’m regretting not picking up one of the tinted versions.

Thayers Witch Hazel Toner

After seeing it mentioned as a cult-classic for years, I finally got around to buying the Thayers Witch Hazel Toner last summer. It’s a perfect addition to my routine. For days when my skin is on edge, this gentle, calming toner comes in hand. Any redness from irritated skin or acne goes away. It also does a great job of removing lingering impurities and dead skin. If you aren’t keen on the rose smell, this comes in a variety of other scents too.

Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser

You’re probably rolling your eyes at this entry. Yes, I know this is my third time mentioning it on the blog this past week, but it’s too good not to fangirl over. The Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser is quite possibly the best cleanser I’ve used, ever. Oh so soothing and hydrating! It’s now a firm staple in my winter skincare routine. The best Glossier skincare pick, in my opinion.

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate

Scrubs were always a sore topic for me. The slew of drugstore ones I tested out in the past felt so horribly abrasive and stripping on my skin. Early last year, I ventured into the world of high-end scrubs when I picked up the Kate Somerville ExfoliKate. After using it just once, I decided to never go back to cheap scrubs. This is life changing, folks! Kiss rough dry skin goodbye!

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

Although I bought this at the end of 2016, I didn’t fall in love with it until early 2017. The Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate is my favorite skincare find of this year. I don’t know how this works, but my skin has never been healthier. I press several drops of this lightweight facial oil onto my face every night and wake up in the morning with glowy, bright skin.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel

The Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel is a godsend if you struggle with oily skin during the warmer months. I’m always having issues with my makeup melting off during the summer so I tend to gravitate towards lighter, more mattifying moisturizers. This keeps my skin hydrated, but doesn’t get greasy like the other day moisturizers I use. I got my hands on the travel-size option, which is still going strong despite having used it religiously all summer long.

Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses

Sunglasses were on the top of my shopping list for nearly four years. However, it’s surprisingly difficult to find stylish ones that look good on my face. This summer I made it my mission to get a new pair. My beat up six-year-old Prada ones were dated and heavily scratched. After many trips to sunglasses shops around the country, I settled for these round Dolce & Gabbana tortoiseshell shades. I’m thrilled! They look very modern, yet cool.

Zara Biker Jacket

This was the it jacket last winter. Zara was the first high street shop to put an Acne Velocite biker jacket dupe on the market and the public lapped it up. I desperately wanted to get my hands on one, but whenever I tried to my size was sold out. Thankfully, this season Zara brought it back. I’m so glad I invested in this! I practically haven’t stopped wearing it.

Weekday Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are the best, folks! Like dresses, jumpsuits are an easy no-brainer one-piece outfit you can throw on in a pinch. The only downside is going to the bathroom in one. Yikes. This black Weekday jumpsuit from ASOS is divine. When I put it on I feel like I could actually be that cool “It Girl” who goes to art galleries on the regular, sips fine wine with dinner, always looks effortlessly put together, and wears Le Labo Santal perfume. (I’m not.) It’s the perfect sophisticated, yet edgy night out look. Just sexy enough without showing too much skin.

Vero Moda Wrap Dress

Lately, I’ve been trying to up my wardrobe game by adding classic, sophisticated yet still edgy pieces to my collection. Part of that process is phasing out my college-era mini dresses in favor of midi ones. I absolutely loved this white and black striped Vero Moda wrap dress from ASOS this summer! It got loads of compliments, too! My only annoyance was that the front would fly up with any bit of wind. Still, I refused to give up on it. It’s not available anymore, but here is a similar navy striped one.

Etsy Gold Coin Necklace

This was entirely influenced by the Missoma x Lucy Williams coin necklace collection that nearly every influencer wore last year. I couldn’t find anything on the high street so I went over to Etsy. I must’ve gone through a dozen pages before I stumbled upon this gorgeous necklace. Dainty, yet still a small statement. Plus, it’s based on off an ancient Greek coin, which felt appropriate after my adventures in Greece last fall.

That wraps up my 2017 favorites! What were your best beauty or fashion discoveries of last year?
